Wormwood - The Parasite Cleanser

Wormwood - The Parasite Cleanser

Have you ever heard of parasite cleansing? If you’re not familiar with it, parasite cleansing is any method that has the purpose of eliminating parasites from the body without using prescription medications. This can be done by eating a specific diet, taking supplements or other detox products. Many natural plants may help the body clear out parasites and one of them is wormwood. Let’s get to know more about this herb and why is it considered a parasite cleanser.

What is wormwood?

Wormwood is an herb that is native to Europe but can be seen in other parts of the world like Asia, Africa, South America and the United States because it can grow readily beyond any climate. It has a distinctive aroma and all parts of the plant have been used as an herbal medicine because of its health benefits. Wormwood is known to be added in a French alcoholic drink called absinthe and some say that people go crazy after drinking it because of the herb content. Actually, the concentration of wormwood in absinthe will not make you hallucinate and the only reason why people go out of their minds after drinking is due to the excessive amount of alcohol in the beverage.

Thujone - the active compound

Wormwood contains a plant compound known as thujone. Thujone is thought to excite the brain by blocking the release of a  chemical in the brain called gamma-aminobutyric acid or GABA which has a calming effect to our bodies. Thus, wormwood will cause you not to sleep.

Is Wormwood effective as a parasite cleanser?

Since wormwood contains an active compound, thujone, this is thought to be the reason for its parasite-fighting property. The Journal of Heminthology conducted an animal study and found out that the antiparasitic effects of wormwood are as similar to the prescribed antiparasitic medication praziquantel when given as treatment for dwarf tapeworm. In 2018, a human study was conducted and also found out that wormwood is as effective as praziquantel in treating schistosomiasis or flatworms.

Bottomline

If you are one of those who want a natural method of clearing your body of parasites, using wormwood supplements may have promising benefits as a parasite cleanser. However, more research is still needed to suggest them as a cure.
